The Grip Wizard was invented by my now 16-year-old son, Matthew. He started private Occupational Therapy sessions in the fourth grade, as a way to improve his fine motor skills and penmanship. His Occupational Therapist suggested he hold a penny or small object in his palm with his pinky and ring finger, while he wrote. This would allow him to develop the Dynamic Tripod Grip (thumb, pointer and middle digits). The distraction of holding something in his hand, while performing an undesirable (yet crucial) activity, gave Matthew the idea for a device that would hold his ring and pinky finger down for him. He used the Grip Wizard for about two months and developed the correct writing grip, thus improving his fine motor coordination and penmanship. By removing the physical difficulties of the process, Matthew was better able to focus on the content of his writing.
Matthew entered two competitions in 2013 with his idea: The Cincinnati Invention Convention and Warren Buffet's Secret Millionaires Club Grow Your Own Business Challenge. He was awarded two Scholarships in the Invention Convention and received the Grand Prize of $5,000 in the GYOB.
I am so proud that Matthew created something that filled his own needs and that he has encouraged me to share it with others. I have learned so much through this journey and I look forward to Creating Fine Motor Magic with you and your Wizard Kids!
